Guzzi delivers poems full of intensity, driven by questions: what is the place of women in the 21st century? Why (or do) we ignore the plight of women in developing nations? What is the place of religion in a technology-dependent world?
Guzzi is a skilled poet, using alliteration and rhyme subtlety and in clever ways. Her use of repetition gives her poetry a lyrical quality, but it may feel redundant to some readers.
The Hurricane is almost unrelenting in tone and content, but there are also quieter moments of contemplation. These are poems that shake up the spirit. I will definitely re-visit the collection, and especially recommend the powerful ‘Mining Assets’ and the engaging and unusual imagery presented in ‘Cling’.
